When did they start putting surveillance camera everywhere in North America?

I am wondering when did Canada and America start putting surveillance camera everywhere on the streets? Did it start in the 80s,90s or 20s?
I personally don’t like this idea.
I like the old 70s-90s times so much.
It picked up in earnest after 9/11, in public areas anyway. Private industry and common areas of apartments, condos, hotels started a bit after that. Places like 7-11, etc started back in the late 70’s early 80’s.
