How far would you go when it comes to securing your house? Will a watch dog be adequate? A neighbor who might be too busy possibly? Or a teenage kid you hired from across the neighborhood to babysit for you? Cases of theft and child accidents at home with or without the nannies and house-helps have been constantly progessing a few years before that; currently, home video surveillance have been part of almost each household. Video surveillance is a huge help, not just in documenting circumstances and whatever happenings around the premises, but in stopping untoward accidents too.

Home surveillance systems today allow you to regulate your home and what goes on in there even if you’re miles away from home. Contemporary technology as well as digital video surveillance systems make it possible for us. You could have the choice of watching real-time feeds away from your home to your computer with the World Wide Web or preserving the information for future reference or both. All these in superior-quality color representation. You can even integrate infrared technology for better visibility at night.

For similar purposes, video surveillance security systems are also so in demand in stores, offices, and other working venues. It not only monitors those customers who are coming in but also the individuals who are inside the premises themselves–the employees. Problem employees have been causing their bosses so much headache that checking them through video security cameras is just as vital as looking out for thefts and aggressive customers. The monetary damage that these staff cost is nowhere near the cost of acquiring a quality video surveillance system set up at the establishment that is why business people were the first ones to acknowledge and embrace the significance of this technology.

CCTV cameras are what we typically see in establishments like banks, offices, shops, and other public areas. With closed circuit TV, you could view numerous feeds from a variety of cams simulataneously. This makes regulating a couple of rooms a lot simpler. CCTV also usually have motion sensors that detect movement in an otherwise unfilled room and track it, or locate a person in a crammed place and monitor his motions. In low-light areas or dark areas, CCTV with infrared cameras is the most excellent surveillance system, specifically if the location is prone to pranks as well as crimes at night.

With video security, you’re not simply trying to secure your business and personal possessions and properties, but also yourself together with your family. Visible security cameras are enough to prevent an ugly scene from occurring because would-be perpetrators will be hesitant to do so if they discover that they are being videotaped. If it is at home, nannies and sitters tend to be more careful, and thieves and pranksters are more hesitant to do some misbehaving. And you could watch what your kids are up to simultaneously. At the workplace, it is similar thing: it stops untoward employee attitude while protecting them from possible hazardous behavior from clients outside. Just as human security personnel, only less expensive. So is it worth it? I’d say it is.

You’ve had that niggling feeling for some time now. Your two-year-old son cries everytime you turn him over to his nanny. Apprehensive, you ask the woman you hired three weeks ago to explain your son’s strange behavior. She gives you an explanation that sounds quite plausible. You buy it, of course. Why shouldn’t you? You’re desperate for someone to leave your son to. Furthermore, each time you are home, everything seems normal. The nanny seems devoted to your baby.

Still, you cannot shake off that bad feeling. At a loss for options, you consider installing home security cameras. You feel a home security camera will show you what your little son cannot tell you. You have no idea how home security cameras work, though, or what exactly makes them tick. Debating whether it is a good idea to install home security cameras, you ask around.

The major advantage of concealed home security cameras is that they’re quite visible to anyone. So, you need not feel guilty about filming your nanny’s interaction with your son. There won’t be any need to tell her she’s being filmed, not with the home security camera looming larger than life in front of her.

You discover from others that home security cameras have been able to expose incidents of child abuse from the hands of trusted caregivers. You are heartened by the fact that home security cameras are tools people use to catch thieves, record evidence of affairs and other suspicious activities, or pinpoint inappropriate attitude by trusted household members. Additionally, your worries about lugging around and installing in the ceiling some piece of chunky video surveillance equipment are completely squashed. You discover that home security cameras are, thanks to modern technology, available in a variety of shapes and sizes. These home security cameras come with features you can choose from, depending on your surveillance needs.

A quick browse of sites reveal that home security cameras may come disguised as stereo speakers, computer terminals, alarm clocks, or even smoke detectors. They may also be small enough to be easily hidden in everyday items like pens, mobile phones, shirt buttons, shoe buckles, and refrigerator magnets.

You are also delighted to discover that besides being used as a monitoring mechanism, home security cameras also let you check on your sleeping child or keep an eye on your 12-year-old daughter left home alone. Home security cameras can let you track down and crack down on the neighborhood kids who vandalize your property or throw toilet paper onto your backyard.

So, you get a home security camera. Two days later, you fire your nanny. You saw on video she eats up most of your son’s food. She also leaves him to putter about on his own while she lazes back and watches TV.

The doorbell rings. You stop viewing the tape from yesterday showing the caregiver eating all the animal crackers straight from the box while your child sleeps in his crib. You get up to answer the door, relieved to have stopped someone from neglecting and potentially hurting your child — even when you were not there when it happened.

Let’s face it. These days security is not just about banks, casinos and airports. Today, security is as significant to big companies as it is to regular consumers. Personal security and safety are an impending matter as business security. Families and individuals need to feel safe at home and when going about their day by day activities wherever they are. People have that entitlement to live without fear of assault or of being stolen from.

Fortunately, today we are equipped with surveillance and security products that can help ensure our safety and protection. Even more, closed-circuit television and video surveillance systems are now easy on the pocket and simple enough to be utilized at home. The technology of video surveillance is now within reach of the average consumer, making it an effective and budget-friendly part of any home security system as well as of a business’ daily video surveillance.

Philippine Security offers the best CCTV technology that could turn your video surveillance equipments into the most precious tool for safety and loss prevention for residential use. Our DVRs and cameras provide for efficiency and practicality in the sharpest and sleek designs.

Surveillance camera systems come with a heap of benefits. A surveillance system can serve as alert prior to a dangerous situation (e.g., break-ins) as well as provider with important record of events. Monitoring your home can be priceless when identifying and catching perpetrators of crimes. The deterrence of a crime will offset the cost of buying video surveillance equipments.

You want to ensure your family’s safety even at home. Our wide-ranging list of cameras will help you keep an eye of vigilance while you’re somewhere else at home whether at daytime or nighttime. While you’re away from your residences, our surveillance equipments can be your source of peace and ease for your family and property.

Creating a start of the art home can mean many different things to many people. However, The Joseph Rowntree Foundation did a study of the market potential for Smart Homes (state of the art homes) and came up with this helpful definition:-

“Smart Homes use electronic networking technology to integrate the various devices and appliances found in almost all homes, plus building environment systems more common in factories and offices, so that an entire home can be controlled centrally or remotely as a single machine. This technology offers the prospect of significant improvements in the living standards of older, sick and disabled people who, without automated domestic activities, might otherwise be totally reliant on home care.”

Their study shows that most people wanted a smart home to help with security and safety, access their home and items in it remotely and because it should save people time and money:-

Reference: Joseph Rowntree Foundation
Following this study, we cover these three elements within this section, as well as explaining one of the biggest topics for State of the Art Homes ‘multi room visual and audio entertainment’. We have also trawled the magazines, shows and the internet to try and find some tantalising ’state of the art’ home products which for most will just be a dream, but are still great fun to investigate!

Networking Your Home
This is one of the main features of any state of the art or smart home. Basically it involves a system which integrates all the utilities and technology in your home. There are many companies who now offer to network your home, but be careful that you choose a company that is happy to give you case studies and work to ensure that they minimise the damage to your home through installing network cables/features.

The basic idea of networking is that your (or a) PC runs everything in your home and you have an easy to use ‘interface’ to turn on, off, adjust, or change your heating, entertainment, security, lighting, appliances and any other super gadgets you have in your home. It is worth reading up as much as possible if you are considering doing this as it is complex and you need to make sure you get a system which has a company that can provide the best customer service in case anything goes wrong.

Research
To start, checkout these articles and websites to help understand exactly what networking is and what you need to think about for your home:-

Although a site for businesses, the information by Next Wave Technology summarises what networking is and how it works.

Whole Home Systems explains well what this technology can do for your home.
Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association which have a members’ directory to search for companies to work with. The ‘Beginners Guide to Home Automation’ is a book you might like to read.

What you need to think about when considering networking your home
The most important thing to think about is what do you want the system to do? Is it for security reasons that you want the system, or do you want to control everything from lights, to the individual temperature of a radiator at a button?

Once you have a list of what you would like the system to do and why, then you should think about how much you want to disrupt your home. Are you happy for it to be completely rewired and redecorate after, or would you prefer to look at wireless options?

After that, it’s a matter of budget. Perhaps you would like to do it a bit at a time, so you may need a system that can be added to, or you might want to do it in one go, it all depends on how much you want to spend and what are the main features that you want to concentrate on.

For more information about what to consider, look at the Joseph Rowntree Foundations’ checklist.

For more help on networking your home, go to the CEDIA website and find companies in your area, look in our Additional Resources Section and go through the ’smart home examples’ to learn more about homes that have already been created with ‘intelligent systems’.

Security and Safety
We already have access to quite sophisticated security and safety features, some of them incredibly simple and cheap to install. For example, one of the easiest ways to make your home that bit more secure – particularly when you are out – is to use timer plug ins. These allow you switch on your lights or any other appliance such as a radio or TV remotely at specific times during the day and night.

Other features that are easy to purchase and install and are considered ’standard’ these days are CCTV equipment to protect your home. So what technology is required to move your home to ’smart home’ status and improve security and status?

There are several new features that have been developed for state of the art or smart homes, but it might be useful to checkout what security features you need for you home, by going to Home Security Action for their Security Review and Checklist and A Guide to Home Security by Crime Reduction UK.

State of the Art Locks
If you frequently lose your keys, then this is ideal, Finger Print Door Locks! Basically they do what they say on the tin – instead of keys, you get into your home by using your fingerprint, something you are unlikely to ever leave behind! There are several companies that do this, but the main one to look at in the UK appears to be UK Biometrics. Checkout prices for these products, but expect to pay from £200 per lock. Do get independent advice as to the safety of these products – ideally find someone who already uses them or ask the company for some case studies or referrals.

State of the Art CCTV
It’s OK having CCTV at home or somewhere where you can access the internet, but what if you are not there to watch it? What if you are half way around the world? Don’t despair, our mobiles are now being put to good use through a CCTV system that sends a text to your mobile if something sparks movement for a camera. As long as you are not in the country with lots of wildlife around triggering the system every few minutes, it means you can keep tabs on what’s happening in your home.

State of the Art Integrated Central Locking
This is an incredibly neat system. Rather than having to worry about locking every window or door, or worrying whether you locked anything or not, then this home version of car central locking is definitely worth a look!

Additional Information
Budgets vary for State of the Art Home Security, varying from £500 to £5,000 – I guess it depends how much stuff you have in your home!

Smart Products
There are many products that you can have in your home these days, from the now well written about fridge with a screen, and internet connection to a wireless system allowing you to access the net from anywhere around the home. However, if you know where to look, there are even more ‘wow’ smart home products that you can purchase. Some are surprisingly affordable, while others run into the hundreds of thousands.

Kitchen
Anyone living in a sophisticated smart home would want to have the best wines. Once you do have the best wine, the next most important thing to do is to have the very best place to keep them. Try the Spiral Cellars wine cellar. It claims that you can install it anywhere under floor, but I’m not sure we all have space for 1,600 bottles of wine under our floor!

Bathroom
For the best bathing experience in the world, try this bath out. It’s fully illuminated and even incorporates a waterfall! Feel free to invite your friends around, seems to fit. Visit Teuco.

If showers are more your thing, try the Tray Bien a new up-market, sleek shower tray. It fits flush with the floor and the waste is nicely covered over, so no horrible hairs in the morning. Visit Kaldewei or try the ‘rain shower’ it’s amazing!

For the ultimate experience in ‘bathroom entertainment’ think about tiling your bathroom with a TileVision – yes it’s all built in and if installed properly should be extremely safe.

Bedroom
Fancy having a plasma screen that appears or disappears as you instruct at the bottom of your bed? Visit Mayflower Designs.

Accessories
The digital picture player, a bit gimmicky, but great if you are a fan of photos. Basically they play your digital photos through a TFT LCD screen and you can programme the ‘photo frames’ to play the pictures you want at the frequency you want.

Inspirational Heating from Aestus
Making radiators a design feature in your home. Visit Aestus.

Innovative Features
Memory clocks, overflow alerts, voice prompts, all via a housing association!

Smart Home Examples
As smart home technology begins to influence our lives more and more, new homes developers are starting to implement technology into the home from the start of construction. Here are some examples of how technology is being implemented into homes around the country:-

The Orange at Home House
A home adapted to test out all the latest in smart technology by the mobile operator Orange. There is also a good write up and further information from the Homebuilding and Renovating Show.

The Life House
This house by David Wilson Homes has been test driven by a family to see the advantages and use of smart technology in a home.

There are also two companies that are worth checking out who create smart homes for individuals, these are Green Amber and Whole Home Systems.

Most US residents worry about leaving their home unprotected while they work or travel. And if they live in “bad” neighborhoods where crime is frequent, they may even have trouble sleeping. Unfortunately, living in fear isn’t that unusual today. Elderly people living alone and latch-key kids at home alone after school are vulnerable and less able to protect themselves. Fear may even drive people to keep guns in their homes, introducing the risk of being injured or killed by your own weapon!

No matter how unrealistic our fears may be, they are based on real events. The daily news is evidence of the danger of becoming a victim of crime, and the proliferation of crime-oriented television shows creates even more concern. Let’s face it. People are becoming more cautious these days, and well they should.

Even in sparsely-populated rural areas, people are locking their doors and windows. Children are taught not to open the door to strangers. Dead bolts and chain locks are top sellers. When families leave town for a few days, they stop mail deliveries and ask neighbors to keep an eye out for them. Whole neighborhoods cooperate to establish Neighborhood Watch programs. And many households are equipped with home security devices.

Modern burglars, vandals, and other intruders are smart. They don’t enter just any home. They watch and wait for the right opportunity to relieve you of your possessions or deface your property. They do their homework, identifying easy entry points, observing family schedules, and always planning alternative ways to make a fast buck.

Locking your doors and windows just doesn’t cut it anymore. Unless your home was constructed using hard, heavy-duty lumber, massive doors, thick unbreakable glass, and double-secure installation, windows and doors might as well be open portals to the experienced intruder. Even those extra-secure features will only serve to slow a burglar down. They may prevent break-ins if your intruder as to make a lot of noise to get in. But is it worth the risk?

Criminals pay attention to home security systems, too. They know how to disable or avoid them. But a house that’s well-equipped with a reliable home security system that combines alarms, motion detectors, and video monitoring is a good, dependable deterrent.

The truth is that even the best home security systems aren’t enough alone. Households that contain a lot of valuables, whether they’re expensive items or precious family heirlooms with sentimental value, need extra security measures to be secure. A strong fireproof safe is an asset, particularly when you have important papers and cash on hand. And good lighting around the perimeter of your home and yard discourages strangers who don’t want to be seen.

Alarms are popular and fairly effective, as most intruders will bolt when that screaming alarm sounds the alert. The better burglar alarm systems include a variety of security measures like motion and sound detectors, multiple control panels, cameras, and remote control keypads. Homeowners who can afford the bells and whistles will find it well worth the investment to get the added protection.

No matter where you live and what your neighborhood is like, you can secure your home from unlawful entry. There isn’t a fool-proof security system: criminals are too smart and greedy for that. But if you want to install a reliable system to protect your family and prized possessions, you must make a thorough assessment.

Know what your home’s vulnerabilities are and what types of measures will secure those vulnerabilities. If you need electronic equipment, do your research and find out what’s most cost-effective and reliable before you make purchases. Consider all your options, including guard dogs or high-protective family pets, to improve home security and protect your family.

You don’t have to live in fear or buy a gun. You can take reasonable precautions that will make your house a real, safe home.
