Kissimmee Tornado Outbreak – CCTV

The Kissimmee Tornado Outbreak occurred late at night on February 22, 1998 and continued into the early hours of the 23rd. Seven tornadoes were spawned, killing 42 people, injuring 160, and leaving a trail of massive destruction across the state of Florida. This clip shows two angles recorded from a CCTV system installed in a supermarket. Unfortunately I don’t know the location, and the dual timestamps don’t help much! … tornado tornadoes CCTV caught video film …

I lived there since ‘84 and this was the only tornado that was bad. No worries.

They put the newer one in the new complex because the other had some major issues. No issues after the tornado leveled the empty building though :)

Why was there two Winn-Dixies built so close to each other?

This is great stuff – I’ve been trying to find this footage for years since I saw it on TV. Thanks for posting. Just like the Iowa bank footage in 2008.

That tornado broke the glass in my apartment in BBL. Made my sister bleed and torchured our cars . i have the video of the after math. But were all fine.

Actually this place is now called something else but at the time it was a Winn Dixie. Now called Freshco or something like that?

  8. MnMSpencer says:

This is the Winn Dixie that is still there today. The old location was totally leveled. This store was built & opened not more than 5 months before the tornadoes hit.

The hubby & I were supposed to go up to Rosie’s that night for karaoke. I had a really bad toothache so we stayed home. Good thing we did. Seeing the aftermath with former President Clinton back then was heartbreaking. Goes to show you never know when a tragedy will strike.

I drove past that Winn-Dixie the next morning and a handicap sign was imbedded about 3 feet into the concrete wall about 20′ up near the entrance, crazy stuff.

I was there when that tornado hit. I’m so glad me and my family didn’t get killed, I was only five years old at that time, and I slept right threw it! My dad was driving home that night when the tornado hit, and i’m glad he didn’t die!

I think the car is being pushed by the tornado. Either that or one of the people darting in the store was in such a panic to get inside that they forgot to put the car in park. I’d hate to think that’s somebody just pulling up.

ya i live about 5 minutes from this location. lol that was one crazy night

  16. Geminishade08 says:

Yeah i remember this, it was in fact a Winn Dixie. All that is left there now is a parking lot behind a Bank of America in BVL.

The clear shot of the market logo at :36 suggest that this is a Winn Dixie.

  18. tornadolover101 says:

  20. somerandomcrazy says:

Yeah I was going to say it looks like a WinnDixie.. I remember this.. and it ended up being a total of 13 tornadoes in one night last count I heard on it. Saw half if not all form near my house in Southern Lake County

This Winn-Dixie replaced an older one that used to be on the west side of Boggy Creek Road in another shopping center. The old Winn-Dixie building was leveled (along with most of the shopping center) and is now an empty field. I have a video of it somewhere.
