There are add ons to alarms that people over look that can keep your car safe. You can add high decimal sirens inside your car (placed under seats and dash area... as loud as a gun shot) that makes it pretty hard to steal stuff unless you are wearing ear plugs, unless you want your hearing damaged. We installed a couple of these on the higher end systems we do at our shop and we haven't had any complaints yet. While people are use to hearing the standard alarm system its still another level of attention and like mentioned here already you can use a 2 way paging system to alert you if your car is being broken into. Something is better than nothing so if you don't want to spend another 400 to potentially save $5000 dollars worth of equipment its up to you.
References :
Installer.

As someone who has had their car broken into practically once a month, an alarm system is amazing. However, your uncle and grandpa are correct that not a lot of people pay attention anymore. That's why when I decided to finally get an alarm, I got a two-way alarm. It comes with a little remote thing that tells you when someone is breaking in or anything. It vibrates and makes noise, so if you have it on you, you know what's going on. Mine was almost $450 with installation, but I believe it was money well spent. Maybe you could sell your one-way and buy a two-way?

I park my car in my driveway in a private court in a nice neighborhood, but my sound system was stolen as well as a lot of expensive other things...
References :
Personal Experience
