It's a helluva question, and there are some incredible answers. In England we are being bombarded by the "Human Rights" brigade – claiming that criminals have rights etc. Well they do. All humans have Human Rights – it's what separates us from the animals. That said, however, HONEST people deserve to have BETTER rights, eh? Or else why be honest?

Just a personal point of view, I don't buy that crap about 'If you don't break the Law than you've got nothing to worry about' – that's bullshit. And it doesn't give good enough reason for spying on decent, innocent civilians of the the general public. Cameras don't make me feel safe, nor secure.

This is a breach of the Human Rights of millions of people, every day, who don't commit crimes (Articles 11 & 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights). Those who do commit the crimes are really a tiny minority. It's not justified. Are there any people out there who think there could be a case to take the UK Government to the European Court of Human Rights? I know it sounds a bit zany, but one day it may be too late…

CCTV will eventually stop growing but the Technology built into the CCTV will advance further. most reasons for CCTV Cameras increasing is due to the reduction of the "Bobby on the Beat", Camera's are being tested that will detect suspect items hidden on the person the so called "X ray" camera's how ever these will be able to give a very weak x ray picture & wont be able to see "flesh". Audio Camera's are being tested in Operational status in certain parts of London. but they are controlled/monitored by Computer Systems that watch out for "HOT" words that trigger an alarm in the Control room to alert the CCTV Operator.
I Monitor 65 Camera's in the Control room but only have 15 monitors, so their are times that things are missed. some camera's will switch to the main Event Monitor if something kicks off automatically. the law states We/Operators are NOT allowed to "follow" or watch ANYONE for a period of 6 seconds Unless they are Comitting a Arrestable Offence. even the police Cant ask the Operator to Place a Camera onto a person or Building for long periods unless they have "RIPA" Authoritiy & that can only be given by a High Level Police inspector.
So unless your Comitting a crime your ok.

when that time comes they will start replacing the first ones with newer models, better picture quality – xray cameras etc…

Its great isn't it? We do all these CCTV cameras and nothing stops the crime. If one is drunk enough to beat the 5hit out of a stranger for absolutely nothing on the street, I would suggest one is drunk enough not to think about the cameras.
Money, resources and time all wasted? Maybe but I don't think people will stop putting them up or watching the feed.
It is a strange old world we live in.

Quite possibly. Like everything else, once you start it it's very hard to go back. On one hand I don't like the thought of being watched at every turn; but on the other if it convicts someone from carrying out a voilent act against me then I would be very grateful it was there.

when the first one was fitted it was too much, Thank god (and I am an atheist) I had the early years of my life in an era when you could break petty laws without any consequences from the big brother! Camera's do not stop crime, they move it away to areas that are not covered, so the rich will always ensure that some areas are left unmonitord, or if they are monitord, they will be done so discreatly, so the major crime is moved away from the 'big brothers', and the camera then become the source for silly rules to be enforces. its a social nightmare.
