I got a Panasonic BL-C10 webcam, I can look over my drive way from any Pc/laptop from anywhere in the world, also downloaded free Panasonic recording software, which can be set to times/ movement in the area (PIR or pixel changes) Other models as well!

When entering a store with surveillance cameras, what is the purpose of showing customers where the camera is?

When I walk into some stores, I’m immediately "greeted" by a monitor screen where I can see myself coming in.
Does this lessen the likelihood that people will be inclined to steal for example?
