What types of home security systems are best for apartments?

I live in an apartment with my girlfriend. I work at a bar late on the weekends, often leaving her home alone until I am done with my shift early in the morning. We have a deadbolt locked door into our apartment but the door is older and our neighborhood is somewhat questionable. What would be the best security system for keeping her safe while I’m at work. It has to be something that will not sound when I get home from work, waking the neighbors. Hoping to not spend a ton of money or having to wire something. Any advice would help…

My laptop has been infected with the vista home security 2012 virus, and I need help removing it- please note that I can’t access the internet, or any anti-virus software. Please help!

Actually, I think you can access the internet — I did, though I also had a VHS12 infection. What I found was that although the virus stops you from opening a program directly, you can still open program files and then use the opened program from then on. For instance, you won’t be able to open Photoshop directly, but if you click on a Photoshop file then Photoshop will open and can then be used to open other Photoshop documents. Now one curious thing I discovered was that VHS12 didn’t seem to affect Yahoo Messenger. So I opened Yahoo Messenger and from the subsequently opened Yahoo Insider opened my email, which gave me an opened browser. From there I downloaded an anti-spyware program — in my case, Stopzilla. The download and installation worked. A Stopzilla scan revealed the infection and I removed it, though I had to pay to register the new software. But it was worth it.

There are never any guarantees in malware fighting, but here’s my best shot at a generic removal procedure:

First, boot into Safe Mode With Networking. (See below for details.) That sometimes keeps malware from protecting itself. Then, if you have an anti-virus, make sure it has the latest virus definitions and run a full scan with it. If you don’t have one, many people here swear by Malwarebytes (it’s free).

I suggest you also download Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware Free (they’re free), install them, update them and run full scans with them in Safe Mode With Networking.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode with Networking:

1.Log out and reboot your machine.
2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.
3.Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.
4.Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.
5.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.
6.When you’re finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Another trick that may enable anti-malware and/or its installer program to sneak past the malware is to change the name of the anti-malware program itself. The names of the files and their locations differ between anti-malware programs, but the procedure is always the same:

1.In Windows Explorer, find the folder with the anti-malware.
2.Change the name of the program (it always ends with a .exe) to virtually anything else, but keep the “.exe” part.
3.Run that.

Note that even if the anti-malware programs get rid of the malware, they may not be able to reverse the effects. Search the Web for possible fixes.

Update and run full scans regularly, not just when you think you already have malware.

How do I disconnect my home security alarm?

I have a home security system that was installed by the previous homeowners. A while back, it started going off at random intervals throughout the day, for no apparent reason. We tried disconnecting it, with no luck, and ended up having to turn off the circuit breaker it’s attached to. This would be fine, if that particular circuit breaker didn’t also control the electricity to the bathroom and my bedroom (no lights, no outlets, etc). Does anybody know how I can turn this GD alarm off once and for all?? Thanks in advance!

These operate on low voltage.

Somewhere, there is a transformer plugged into a regular receptacle. They are typically tan in color. It may even have a small screw that holds it in place (will be installed in place of the screw that normally holds the cover plate on). Unplug this transformer and you are halfway there (no wire cutting needed).

Next, you will need to open the control unit and disconnect the backup battery that is usually there. This is usually a metal box, approx 12"wide x 14" high x 3" deep, and it is usually in a garage or a closet. Most are either tan, gray, or white in color.
