setting up a pub CCTV system?

I require some help setting up a pub CCTV system.

I have the cameras all mounted from the previous owner, and a box called a ‘MDVR’ and theres a number on it saying RS-485.

I am trying to get this setup soon as I think some staff are giving away free pints, does anyone have any tips or knowhow when it comes to this kind of setup? thank you.

Well I do not know the answers, but MDVR is a mobile digital video recorder and RS-485 is a serial communications method of transmission for data.
CCTV people do not give many trade secrets away, they like you to pay them to set it up for you.
You should have cameras, a device for recording their output and a device for playing back the visual output that has been stored and a method of connecting them together. Also power supplies for all of those as they all work off electricity. The cameras may be powered from the MDVR though.

Not much help I`m afraid, you might have to get an expert in to set it up, but as you have some of the parts installed already then it may be financially viable in the longer term, given your suspicions.

How much does it cost for installation of a CCTV system?

I have a system already running a recorder, and i have cameras and wiring. I need two cameras/cabling moved to other locations around the shop, and i need the other 4 cameras adjusted as to where they point to give better coverage. How much am I looking at for labor? The wiring will have to be run through the attic so i know its probably not going to be cheap. Thanks!

You should be able to get that done for labor only since you already have the system. You will need some cable possibly too. Bartering is a good way to get the work done as its cost effective. What you need done is not hard, have you considered doing it yourself. just unplug the cable from the camera, unmount the camera, move the wiring in the attic, make the hole into the wall with a drill, move the wall plug mount box to the new location, pull the cable to the wall mount box, install the camera and plug it in. it should be cheap if you pay someone

I want to find a reliable installer.

If you don’t know any recommended companies , you could get 2 or 3 companies to give you quotes, see if they sound polite and professional. If possible get them to give you details of installations they have completed near you and speak to the clients to see if they were happy.

CCTV cameras can be catagorized by how they are powered. the oldest type have separate DC power in and video out connectors. Then they started putting the DC voltage on the coax which became both the input and output for the camera, that was a one cable solution. i think this is what you are calling ‘regular’. POE means that the camera is digital output on an ethernet, but the ethernet is a special kind that also provides DC power. This makes the camera work similar to USB connected web cameras that get 5 volt power from the computer via USB cable. i have done only one POE installation, it was for a LAN connected microwave converter where the radio was located at the parabolic dish.

POE requires special equipment, to inject the DC on the cat5 cable. normal ethernet devices are not made to handle significant current on the wiring, if you have multiple cameras connected by a ethernet switch, that switch is a special kind that passes the operating voltage to all the connected cat5 cables.

imho, running a single RG59 to each CCTV camera position is a much simpler solution than networking.

I’ve seen cat camera sets available for one hundred pounds. But I have better things to spend one hundred pounds on. So can I buy a regular CCTV camera (normally used for the home), strap it to my cat’s head, have a hard drive implanted and a USB socket so I can connect the cat to my computer and extract the data. I want videos of where my cat goes.

Identify the CCTV equipment manufacturers. The cameras and recording device could be different. Since you did not tell us anything about the CCTV system, there is no way for us to help you.

There are analog and IP-network based systems. The "technician" should be able to find the required information if the technician does not already know what is required.

If the CCTV system is IP-network based, then a router will also be needed. The technician will need to learn about computer network support, IP address assignment, possibly DNS and static IP assignment and maintenance in the router… network security… and more…
