Its hard to say what the punishment is. There are set standards, but each case is dealt with individually and the outcome is based on many factors pertinent to that case.

Thanks

Is the DVR setup with a static PUBLIC IP? or are you using a DDNS service?

If using a DDNS or if the DVR is connected to a network with a STATIC IP, you may need to setup port forwarding on the router to point traffic to the DVR.

You will need to look in the user guide for the DVR or access the setup menu. Normally if you use the vendors app it would be setup with the default ports for the DVR.
If the DVR has a web viewer you should be able to view it by opening a browser and entering the IP address and port number (http://{ip address}(colon){port number} )

I’ve got two wired home CCTV cameras, the basic black and white cmos ones that you can pick up cheaply in Argos or whereever and connect via SCART to your TV or VCR.

If I was to install two of these cameras around the house, is it possible to get some time a split SCART connection which would allow both to display on an ordinary TV at the same time?

Thanks

You can get a SCART splitter but that will only display 1 camera per channel so you would have to switch the TV channel to display the other camera.

Your best bet would be to get a 4 Channel DVR. They start at around £110 and can handle up to 4 cameras. Remove the SCART at the end of the leads and attach a BNC connector and connect both cameras to the DVR. Then connect the DVR up to the TV and you can display up to 4 CCTV camera on 1 screen at any one time.

If you want to get something abit cheap you could go for a 4 Channel Portable DVR (link 2) which are around £100 and that provides a plug and play feature, very simple to use.

As you said you purchased them from Argos, the quality of video wont be the best by far. However, you can always purchase better quality cameras from around £30 and upwards.

Give West Midlands Electrics a call if you have any more problems or need any more advice and they would be more than happy to help.

The CCTV cameras and burglar alarms are for my home and i want to feel more safe but i cant spend like £500 or anything so can anyone show me a good, reliable and not expensive place to purchase these?

The cost for a good quality CCTV system will depend on how many cameras you require, the quality of recording and the amount of video you want to store. For a CCTV system you will need to purchase the CCTV cameras, a DVR (Digital Video Recorded) and the required cabling and connectors. To save costs you can install the system yourself or get an Approved Installer to do the job for you.

Now CCTV cameras start from around £25 for the cheapest cameras, you should go for a IR (Infra-red camera) if using it outside.

Depending on the number of cameras you want, you will need to get a 4/8/16 Channel DVR. The cheapest 4 Channel DVR’s with 500GB HHD start from around £110 and up, depending on the features such as internet streaming, mouse, frame rate etc. 500GB should be able to store 2 weeks recording depending on the quality you set for the video recording while 1TB HHD can store around a months recording (these figure a very approximate as it all depends on how the DVR is set up to record)

Connectors will cost around £5. The cabling cost will once again depend on the distance between the cameras and the DVR, usually 10m of pre-made CCTV cabling with connectors is around £9, 20m ~£13 and 30m ~ £19.

Now for the Burglar Alarm System. You will need a Control panel, PIR Detectors and a Bell Box. Control panel start from around £30 for a cheap 8 Channel, detectors start from around £6 and bell boxes start from around £15. So overall for a complete cheap good quality 8 channel Burglar alarm system will be around £93 ex vat.

You pay for what you get. The bigger the budget the better the quality of the products. If you go for a cheap Burgular Alarm system you can spend more on a better quality CCTV system and via versa. Its all up to you. Any good Security Company should say its all about your budget, and should tailor make a System around your budget.

If you have any more problems or want any more advice please feel free to contact West Midland Electrics and they will be more than happy to help.

All the best!

I need small concealable cctv cameras that I can monitor on the internet, where can I get cheap WIRELESS ones that I can afford to help me monitor around my compound?
Also which ones are better, big or small; cable or wireless type?

Firstly if you want to use a wireless kit they start from around £150 if you want a display so you can be in the other room viewing it. However if no display is needed then just the wireless camera and receiver will cost around £50.

Now, another option would be to use a Covert Camera (link 2 below). Most of the covert cameras have a built in power supply (Battery pack) so you can charge them up and then place it in a location you want to monitor. The Covert cameras use either Micro SD or standard SD cards as there Hard Drive to store the data on and hence you can get any size you want, usually up to around 30GB. This will store a week or two of video depending on the video quality and frame rate. A factor to take into account with covert cameras is that you will need to recharge them atleast every few hours depending on the battery life. Would you be able to go and charge them without people realising their location in the compound? Remember covert cameras can be viewed on displays if they have receivers but not over the internet.

If you want to view your CCTV cameras over the internet the only way will be to purchase a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) with the feature to stream onto the internet. This will require you to use cabling to connect the camera to the DVR unless you have a wireless transmitter (link 4 below). A transmitter connected to the camera and the reciever connected to the DVR.

The DVR will have to be connected to the internet using an ethernet cable. In the DVR setup you will then be able to create a web address and password. You can then access this on your iPhone or laptop anywhere in the world. The majority of cheaper DVRs around £150 have the internet feature and all the more expensive ones will have them as standard (link 5 below).

So you best bet is to get wired cameras if possible as they produce the best quality images and have a fixed power supply. You can purchase CCTV kits and install them yourself, but if its alittle over your head get a reputable CCTV installer to do it for you, this is key if you want them to not stand out. Wireless cameras should only be a last resort as image quality can be affected by the range between the DVR and the camera and interference.

Give West Midlands Electrics a call if you have any more problems or need any more advice and they would be more than happy to help.

Them being CCTV means nothing. You can get cameras for CCTV that have the same options as normal ones. At the high end level you’ll find ones with night vision, infra-red, compound 360 viewing and optical zoom (to name some options). The tech these days means there’s not much that can’t be done. A casino/racetrack I used to work at updated their system so they could print pictures right from the video feed (among other things that I wasn’t allowed to know about, because I no longer work there).
So to answer your question straight up. That is something you’ll need to look into as a comparison of each camera. But with todays technology, it is nothing to worry too much about. Here is a link to the options and things that you should be mindful of, when at the store.
