Can pets set off a motion detector for a home security system?

I’m thinking about getting a security system for my house. The system comes with motion detectors. Can cats set off the alarm through the motion detectors?

Yes. That being said, many companies offer motion detectors that either can’t be set off by small animals (as mentioned by another answerer) or can have "pet filters" added onto them so that they aren’t as sensitive. Most newer models are fine with small pets.

I am getting a system installed this week and I asked the same question because I have a small dog. I was told that they set the system so that any motion that is caused by something weighing less than a set amount (ex. 20 pounds since I have a 10 pound dog) will not set off the alarm.
