Can an employer suspend an employee without proof of an offence?

My girlfriend has been suspended from work. They are trying to make out that she is responsible for a number of power failiures in the shop. There is no evidence other than the cctv which places her in the vacinity of the trip switches. The electricians have said there is nothing wrong with the supply and there is no faulty equipment in the store. Any advice anyone can offer on this would be greatly appreciated.

yes if they feel the employee is of harm to the environment even without proof

With pay yes, she might be better off going to see a solicitor just in case they try to charge her.

It happened to me – I was suspended purely on the word of a manager who proved to be delusional (She reported imaginary conversations, and accused me of taking equipment that had never existed in the first place) Even a brief investigation would have established how insubstantial her claims were, but the organisation had ‘policies’ that amounted to suspend first, then investigate – this is unfortunately quite legal.

She needs to get a union rep on the case asap.

Dunno where you are, but there are many "right to work" states in Merka. That means you work at the pleasure of the employer, an employer who can discharge you for any or no reason at all.

An employer can fire or suspend, or accept you’re resignation…whether you give it or not, however…you can call the labor board in your state, and file charges, and go get unemployment until the issue is resolved…especially if they didn’t have proof…and were just suspecting her. She will never get a good reference from that employer anyway, so she’s better off to look for a new job while she’s at it. At least the unemployment will hold her over till she finds a new job.

Don’t know the answer, but Robert (above) did you realise the pun you made
    "CHARGE her"
